CBSE has started implementing the new Three Language Policy from the 2026-27 academic session under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The move is expected to bring some changes for students entering secondary classes in the coming years.
Under the revised policy, students will study three languages during their school education, with at least two of them being Indian languages. A foreign language can also be chosen, provided the requirement for Indian languages is fulfilled.
According to CBSE, the main objective of the policy is to encourage multilingual learning and strengthen the use of Indian languages among students. The board has also indicated that schools and students will be given adequate time to adjust to the new system.
The Three Language Policy has become one of the most discussed education topics in the country and is expected to affect millions of CBSE students in the coming academic sessions.
